The search engine pays tribute to the late legend

Google has marked Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday by creating an animated ‘Google Doodle’ logo and video in his honour.

The search engine’s logo is made up of portraits of Mercury with a large ‘play’ button on the top.

Once hit, the play button launches into a cartoon video soundtracked by Queen’s 1979 hit ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’.

In keeping with the song’s lyrics, the video shows Freddie leaping through the skies while riding a tiger, driving a car into space and sitting on a throne surrounded by bicycling bears.

There’s also a nod towards the ‘I Want To Break Free’ video with a cartoon depiction of Freddie in housewife drag.

Writing on the Google blog, Queen guitarist Brian May said of his bandmate: “He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.”

Doodle designer Ryan Germick said of the video: “It has a lot of fun, goofy stuff to celebrate what an incredible song writer, fashion icon, and musical innovator he was.”

Freddie Mercury died on 24th November 1991 from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDs.

John Lennon and Les Paul are amongst the music icons who have been honoured with Google Doodles in recent years.
